Save the animals, save the world

If you like contributing to human rights groups, but are a little concerned when providing “aid” sometimes means animals for farming and slaughter, then Vegfam might be for you. It’s like Oxfam without the ox/chicken/goat abuse. Vegfam promotes sustainable environmentally-friendly projects that “reduce the dependency on external food aid, decreasing the dependence on outside assistance.” Neat, huh?

For over 40 years, VEGFAM has provided Overseas Famine Relief in more than 40 countries, helping millions of people who were suffering from hunger, thirst, malnutrition and starvation.

We fund sustainable, self supporting projects which do not exploit animals or the environment.

The Fragile Environment of Developing Countries cannot support TWO populations Humans and their Food Animals. Animal derived food, especially if it is intensively produced, squanders resources and damages the Earth’s fragile environment.

VEGFAM is one of only a few Charities in the UK which is trying to prevent Developing Countries copying our ecologically disastrous “Western” Lifestyle.

    I just heard something on a BBC radio program about the ‘carbon footprint’ dilemma and eating only local. Well, eating local is a good idea, as much as possible; however, there would be much less carbon emissions if people cut down or didn’t eat meat. Along with the extra carbon produced with feed processing, and the carbon/ methane produced by the animals, added on to their transportation, that’s a lot of carbon.

    It’s been such an issue here in Lao – the economy has been getting better so people want to eat more meat and people have been raising corn and soybeans to sell to Vietnam for their animal feed industry.

    Hello…I’ve lurked here and there on your blog. And I have a question un-related to this post…sorry…it is a great post though…nice to know that info. (did not know that Vegfam existed!) and I will be passing it along! So, my question is, do you know a good substitute for vital wheat gluten? I tried a search and came up empty.
    Ok…It seems really lame asking a food question under such a great post about world needs and crisis. Sorry.

    There is a gluten sub from Orgran, but it’s probably not what you’re after, and it’s completely useless and overpriced in my experience! Although I’ve never tried making seitan ever. I’m guessing you want to make faux meat? Or some sort of protein dish… the option for that is to use a mix of cooked mashed beans/chickpeas/lentils/tempeh, processed/ground-up nuts and/or gluten-free breadcrumbs. A bit of flaxmeal mixed with water will make a good binder if you want stuff to bind together well… Or check out vegan “meat” products Asian grocery stores – there are a lot of those that are gluten-free made almost totally on soy bean with a bit of herb/spice for flavour… I’m not sure what the range is like in other countries, but Australia gets LOTS of gluten-free soy food products from local Asian companies as well as imports from Asia…

    Thank you…I’m going to see if I can find Orgran here somewhere…maybe Wholefoods…since that sounds easy. A lot of my recipes call for vital wheat gluten, I’ve never made seitan either or even tried it for that matter. So thank you so much for responding! If I can’t find the easy way, I might have a go at the mixed option above. Very helpful…thanks!
